As House Republicans face an uphill battle heading into the midterm elections, a White House insider shared that President Donald Trump has “zero” interest in bolstering their election prospects, Politico reported Tuesday.
A “person close to the president” told Politico that Trump had virtually no engagement with House Republicans on the Hill regarding their upcoming re-election campaigns, which as of Tuesday will take place in 105 days.
A second White House insider – described by Politico as “another White House ally” – explained where the president’s true focus was.
“[Trump] doesn’t care about anything beyond SAVE, Iran, and the ballroom,” the insider told Politico, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
As Trump’s favorability craters to record lows , including in recent polling that showed Trump being abandoned en masse by independent voters, House Republicans face an uphill battle heading into the midterms.
Democrats are favored to retake the House, and Republicans have struggled to address the growing enthusiasm gap between GOP and Democratic voters.
Trump is also sitting on more than $500 million across various PACs and nonprofits that could be used to bolster House Republicans’ electoral prospects, though GOP leadership remains fearful that the president may simply hoard it , much like he did in the lead up to the 2022 midterms.
“Republicans are staring down Election Day with a short list of accomplishments to sell, forcing them to reconcile two truths: The president doesn’t appear interested in helping Speaker Mike Johnson ram legislation over the finish line, and one of the only cases they have to make back home is to frame Democrats as communists,” Politico’s report reads.
“Absent even one victory, all they’ll have to lean on amid rising energy prices and sticky inflation is the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ which they passed over a year ago.”
