FLINT, Mich.  The City of Flint will begin stricter enforcement of vehicle weight restrictions on a portion of Saginaw Street in an effort to protect the downtown street's historic brick roadway.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, vehicles weighing more than 5 tons or 10,000 pounds will be prohibited from traveling on Saginaw Street between Court Street and First Avenue, according to a July 31 announcement from the city.
The restriction is part of an existing city ordinance, but officials said enforcement will increase.
According to the city, the weight limit is intended to reduce damage to the brick roadway caused by heavy vehicles.
Officials said excessive vehicle weight can accelerate wear on the bricks and increase maintenance costs.
City officials kicked off a major multi-million-dollar construction project in April 2023 to repair Saginaw Street.
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) provided $2.3 million in funding for the project, while the City of Flint's Major Roads Fund contributed $3.4 million.
An additional $2.8 million from the federal Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN Act) funded the replacement of the 12-inch water main under Saginaw Street.
The project wrapped up in 2024 but the road has been damaged by overweight vehicles, according to officials.
Vehicles that commonly exceed the 5-ton limit include semi-trucks and tractor-trailers, concrete mixers, dump trucks, garbage trucks, large box and moving trucks, construction vehicles, equipment transport trucks and fully loaded commercial delivery trucks.
