Flint City Councilman accused of election fraud awaits next court hearing 3%

FLINT, Mich. — A preliminary examination has not yet been scheduled in the election fraud case against Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin, but a date could be set during his next court hearing.
El-Alamin’s case is set to go before 67th District Court Judge David Goggins again on Aug. 6, 2026, for a probable cause conference, according to court records.
The 1st Ward councilman is charged with election law false swearing.
Prosecutors allege El-Alamin filed an affidavit containing false information in order to qualify for elected office during his 2024 bid for Flint City Council.
John Potbury, Genesee County chief assistant prosecuting attorney, previously told Flint Beat that the Prosecutor's Office was notified of the alleged falsification by police in December 2025.
“Our allegations are that [El-Alamin] was living in Mt.
Morris Township when he filed an affidavit for candidacy for the Flint City Council,” Potbury said.
“When you file that affidavit, you’re filing under oath, and making a false oath in this case is a five-year felony.”
A probable cause conference gives prosecutors and defense attorneys an opportunity to discuss possible plea negotiations, exchange discovery materials and address scheduling issues.
Potbury said a date for a preliminary examination, during which testimony will be heard and evidence will be presented, will likely be scheduled during the Aug. 6 hearing.
El-Alamin’s attorneys could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
In a separate criminal case, El-Alamin faces charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and domestic violence, stemming from an alleged incident in Mt.
Morris Township on July 10, 2025.
The alleged victim is the councilman's former girlfriend and the mother of his child.
Following multiple delays earlier this year, his trial is currently scheduled to begin Oct.
14, 2026.
A motion hearing in this case is scheduled for Aug.
4, 2026.
El-Alamin was appointed to the Flint City Council after the unexpected death of the late Flint City Councilman Eric Mays.
He later won election to the seat and is serving a partial term that ends Nov.
18, 2026.
Although he currently represents the 1st Ward, El-Alamin is running to represent Flint’s 3rd Ward against Paradise Williams in the Nov. 3 general election.
