Videos show fatal Walmart parking lot car theft, crash 16%

Surveillance videos presented to a grand jury show a man prosecutors say stole a running car from a Walmart parking lot before crashing and killing a passenger who was asleep inside. 
One surveillance video taken before the crash showed a man authorities identified as Harold Allen entering the Walmart at West Charleston Boulevard and South Arville Street through the main entrance. 
Another video showed Allen, wearing a fur trench coat and carrying a plastic bag, as an employee escorted him through a door marked “Eye Exams” into Walmart’s optometry department. 
It is unclear from the footage how long he remained there before exiting through a department door that led back outside. 
Allen then walked through the parking lot, climbed into a dark-colored sedan and sped away. 
Seconds later, the sedan, a Hyundai Sonata, slammed into a silver minivan waiting at an intersection just outside the shopping center. 
The impact sent the minivan spinning into the middle of the intersection, while the sedan continued forward before crashing into a light pole. 
Surveillance video taken after the crash showed the Sonata’s owner, Deborah Requena, pushing a full shopping cart through the parking lot, searching for her car. 
She eventually found it, seeing it was involved in a crash nearby. 
Requena told officers she had left the car running with the keys inside so her son, Benito Saragosa, 37, could sleep while she shopped. 
Saragosa, who was taken to the University Medical Center, died after the crash. 
The Clark County coroner’s office ruled that his death was the result of complications of aspiration of gastric contents, alcohol intoxication and a motor vehicle crash. 
Earlier this month, a grand jury indicted Allen on charges of open murder, grand larceny, battery and reckless driving. 
Allen told police he got into the Hyundai because he thought it was his girlfriend’s black Toyota Camry, according to his arrest report. 
Police said Allen could not recall what happened immediately afterward, but he claimed the gas pedal became stuck before the crash. 
Police also noted in the report that Allen’s account of events contradicted a witness who told police Allen said he was trying to “beat the light.”
