Oleg Levitas, a visionary SEO Expert, founded Pravda SEO to revolutionize how local businesses dominate search rankings.
If your business wants to appear in Google AI Overviews, Perplexity or ChatGPT , your website can no longer carry AI visibility by itself.
Many brands still treat AI visibility like traditional SEO. They invest in more landing pages, paid ads and press releases, then wonder why buyers are still finding answers through forums, reviews and community threads instead of brand-controlled content.
Online discussion forums and communities are some of the places AI tools look for real conversations. A polished website can explain what a company wants to be known for. A forum thread (like Reddit, for instance) can show what customers actually ask, compare, praise and criticize.
I see this a lot in my work with mid-market businesses. Companies that participate in relevant conversations with useful, specific answers often give AI tools better material to cite than companies relying only on paid visibility or formal PR. The payoff reaches past AI visibility. Online community engagement also builds direct brand visibility, community trust and marketing results that I have seen outperform press releases and paid search.
Why Discussion Forums Are Gaining Traction
AI tools are not only looking for facts. They are looking for signs that real people compare, test, question and validate those facts in public.
Reddit has become a public record of how people question, compare and validate brands. In February 2024, Google reportedly signed a $60 million-per-year licensing deal for access to Reddit’s data. Around the same period, analysis from Amsive found that Reddit’s organic search visibility grew by 1,328% in one year , putting it among the most visible domains in Google search.
Generative engines rely on sites like Reddit too. BrightEdge found that ChatGPT cites Reddit in roughly 55% more queries than Google AI Overviews, while reporting compiled by CMS Wire put Reddit at close to a quarter of all Perplexity citations.
When someone asks an AI tool which product to choose, which provider to trust or which option is better, a discussion thread may already be influencing the answer.
I have written before about how AI Overviews affect local businesses . The same issue now applies to brand reputation. If the strongest public conversation about your category is happening without you, AI tools may still use it. They just may not use it in your favor.
Why AI Might Cite Outside Sources More Than Your Website
AI systems often rely on outside sources like discussion forums because it gives them public peer review.
A landing page presents a brand’s own claims. A discussion thread shows the questions, objections and practical details people raise around those claims. When a detailed answer earns upvotes, gets challenged in the comments and still holds up, AI tools get a signal that the answer helped real users.
An upvoted answer gives AI more than text to summarize. It shows that people found the answer useful enough to support, reply to or build on.
Many brands miss this because they treat these spaces like another place to post announcements. That rarely creates useful material for AI. The posts that matter are specific answers, practical examples and discussions tied to real customer problems.
Discussion forums and online communities become especially useful when the question depends on lived experience: buying, using, comparing, fixing or dealing with a product after the sale. Those questions often come right before a decision. If your brand is missing from those conversations, AI may still answer the buyer. It just may answer without you.
How Online Community Engagement Drives Marketing Performance
An effective marketing strategy starts with the questions buyers already ask before they trust a company, product or service.
In my work with engagement programs, direct selling is not the goal. The goal is to give clear, useful answers in the threads AI tools are likely to read later. Digital marketing rewards participation over promotion, so the brands that win there answer real questions instead of broadcasting a message.
Look for weak answers in your category. Search the questions customers ask when they compare options, check cost, question credibility or look for real experience. If the available answers are thin, outdated or biased, there is room to add something better.
Then answer fully inside the thread. Do not drop a link and leave. Explain the issue, give context, name the trade-offs and write in the language people actually use. A useful answer can earn upvotes and replies. A thin promotional comment usually gets ignored or removed.
Brand engagement builds when people see the same useful presence across multiple conversations. That can support brand recognition, referral traffic and stronger public evidence for AI systems to cite.
Consistent community engagement matters more than one strong post. When your brand, expertise or point of view appears repeatedly in helpful answers, AI tools have more trustworthy material to work with.
Making Online Forums Work For Your SEO
AI tools now build answers from more than a company’s own website.
When buyers ask AI assistants what to choose, compare or trust, the answer may come from public conversations outside the brand’s own website. Online communities and forums give them public answers, objections, examples and peer validation that a brand page cannot fully provide.
Brands that answer real questions in relevant discussion threads give AI systems clearer public evidence to pull from later. Useful participation creates a stronger signal than promotion because it shows expertise inside the conversation buyers already trust.
Online community engagement should be part of your SEO, content and brand performance plan. Genuine answers can build community trust , improve brand visibility and give AI systems stronger public material to cite over time.
