19 Mitch McConnell rumors we've investigated

The Kentucky senator faced renewed concerns over his health in the summer of 2026.

Mitch McConnell, who first assumed office as a Republican U.S. senator for the state of Kentucky in 1985, eventually became the longest-serving Republican Senate majority leader in history.

Throughout his tenure, McConnell has been the subject of numerous rumors about his health. In the summer of 2026, Snopes investigated claims that the senator was dead or on life support following reports of his hospitalization .

It wasn't the first time Snopes attempted to track down the facts on McConnell's medical status, including whether he received government care for polio during his childhood and whether an image truly showed McConnell with a bandage around his head after a fall.

McConnell was also at the center of other Snopes investigations throughout the years, including the claim he'd "mysteriously" increased his net worth by millions every year in office and the rumor that he once posed for a photo in front of a large Confederate flag .
