Cries for help and the sound of gunshots were followed by a grisly confrontation in Chino Hills on Wednesday night and a grim discovery in the trunk of a car.
A man had been taken from his home, shot once and shoved into the trunk of a car, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
When sheriff's deputies initiated a traffic stop, a suspected kidnapper executed his victim before being shot and killed himself by deputy gunfire.
The violence began around 10:15 p.m., when deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 2000 block of Monteverde Drive.
According to public information officer Gloria Orejel, a man exited his house and was shot and shoved into the trunk of a car by two men.
Responding deputies spotted the suspect vehicle, a Nissan with Oregon license plates, speeding away and attempted a traffic stop.
At that point, they were unaware of a potential kidnapping, officials said.
The driver failed to yield, instead leading the deputies on a mile-long pursuit that ended in the 2400 block of Wandering Ridge Drive, where the deputies ordered the driver and passenger out of the vehicle.
“The passenger did comply,” Orejel said.
“However, the driver exited the vehicle, approached the trunk of the suspect vehicle and fired a shot into a victim that was inside the trunk.”
Deputies then shot the driver and initiated lifesaving measures on the driver and the victim in the trunk, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger, a man, was not injured and was taken into custody by deputies.
Details on the connection among the three men were not immediately known, and the identity of the victim was not available.
A neighbor told the Daily Bulletin that the victim was a businessman who lived on Monteverde Drive with his wife and three children.
His blood splatters remained on the driveway of their two-story home Thursday.
The nighttime kidnapping and deadly shooting rattled residents.
“I was shocked, to be honest,” local resident Gregory Uthus told ABC7.
“This doesn’t happen in Chino Hills.”
The area of Wandering Ridge Drive where the suspect was fatally shot remained closed to the public Thursday afternoon.
Residents are able to exit the community in either direction to Chino Avenue.
