Side-job scam arrests

TOKYO — Police arrested three men and two women on suspicion of fraud in connection with a scam that targeted people looking for side jobs, the Metropolitan Police Department said Thursday.
The suspects, who allegedly operated under the guise of a recruitment agency, are believed to have defrauded at least 10 people out of ¥1.5 million ($10,000) in total, according to the police.
The arrests stem from a complaint filed by a 21-year-old woman who said she was hired by the agency to work as a data entry clerk, only to be told she needed to pay ¥30,000 for training materials and a company ID card.
After paying the money, she was given a stack of papers and told to make copies, which she was then instructed to mail to various addresses.
She never received any training or job placement, and the agency’s phone number was disconnected.
Police said the suspects are believed to have used similar tactics to defraud others, targeting unemployed individuals and students looking for part-time work.
Investigators are looking into whether the suspects have connections to similar scams that have been reported in other parts of the country.
