HILTON HEAD ISLAND  An early morning fire at a local marina is under investigation after causing extensive damage to several boats and a dock.
Reported shortly after 4 a.m., the blaze occurred at Palmetto Bay Marina, a facility located on south shore of Broad Creek just west of the Charles E.
Fraser Bridge.
A resident of a nearby condominium reported the fire, said Kenzie Hrobar, a spokesperson for Hilton Head Fire Rescue.
Seven boats were destroyed by the fire, and another three suffered minor damage.
A portion of the wooden dock was also damaged.
All of the boats were unoccupied when the fire broke out, and no injuries have been reported.
The first fire unit arrived on scene at 4:16 a.m. and found heavy fire coming from multiple boats along with sections of the dock.
The blaze was brought under control 36 minutes later, but it was not completely extinguished until 9:33 a.m.
Fire crews were still on scene an hour later.
“Our fire investigators will be conducting the investigation.
It's an active investigation so the cause is undetermined at this time,” Hrobar told The Post and Courier.
Palmetto Bay Marina has, according to its website, been in business for 65 years.
Situated one-half mile from the Intercoastal Waterway, the marina offers watersports, fishing charters and waterfront dining options.
