A Liberty County Jail correctional officer has been terminated following an internal investigation into the escape of an inmate from a Houston-area hospital earlier this month, according to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
In a Thursday statement to *Houston Public Media*, the sheriff's office said an internal investigation found the correctional officer "violated multiple jail policies related to inmate transportation and supervision" on July 18, when 31-year-old Yorlan Rafael Reyes escaped from HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood.
The Liberty County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division conducted the investigation into the escape and found the corrections officer committed no criminal wrongdoing, the sheriff's office said.
The name of the officer has not been released.
The sheriff's office said they had worked for the county jail for six years before their termination.
"The correctional officer was immediately placed on administrative suspension following the escape," a sheriff's office spokesperson said in the statement.
"Upon completion of the administrative review, the employee's employment with the Liberty County Jail was terminated."
The sheriff's office said the search for Reyes remains active, adding that Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S.
Marshals Service and the Texas Department of Public Safety are assisting in the search.
Reyes was transported to the Liberty County Jail from Madison County on an outstanding felony warrant for alleged unlawful disclosure or promotion of intimate visual material, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office previously told *Houston Public Media* in a statement that Reyes also had an active immigration detainer.
Reyes has additionally been charged with felony escape.
As of last week, the county jail northeast of Houston had been out of compliance with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards for over 70 days, according to the nonprofit Texas Jail Project.
The Liberty County Sheriff's Office described Reyes as 5-foot-8 and approximately 190 pounds.
Anyone who sees Reyes should not approach him, according to the sheriff's office, which said anyone who believes they know his location should call 911.
