SHERIDAN, Wyo. — A 16-year-old driver was killed Friday when, while driving down Wyoming Highway 336 east of Sheridan, they failed to follow a curve in the road and drove off and over an embankment hill.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the juvenile, who was not named in the department’s crash report, was driving west on Wyarno Road just after midnight July 24.
At around milepost 6.6, the road curves left significantly .
The youth approached the curve in their Ford F-350 truck, but failed to properly negotiate it and drove off the road’s north side.
“The passenger-side wheels and tires drove on the gravel road edge for a distance before the vehicle struck a delineator post and continued through a roadside driveway,” the crash report stated.
The truck hit two more posts before the driver corrected and turned left back onto the road.
They overcorrected, however, and fell into a passenger-side-leading slide that took the truck off the other side of the road.
The truck slid completely off the road and stood back up properly as it continued down the roadside ditch.
As soon as the truck was straightened out, the young driver encountered the hillside on the other end of the ditch and drove over it, going airborne “for a significant distance,” the WHP said.
The truck landed in an open and flat area away from the road on its side.
It rolled for a moment and came to a final rest on its roof.
The young driver, not wearing their seat belt, did not survive.
WHP investigators pointed to driver inattention as a contributing factor to the crash.
Road conditions weren’t considered, as the road was dry and weather was clear.
