Kew Gardens Hills: To Mayor Mamdani: As president of the United Jewish Teachers, I’m writing because your first budget fails to honor your public commitment to NYC’s paraprofessionals.
The original legislation, which enjoys overwhelming support in the City Council, would have provided recurring annual compensation essential to recruiting and retaining qualified paraprofessionals while recognizing the invaluable work they perform.
Paras remain among the lowest-paid education professionals, and this budget leaves them behind.
During your campaign, you acknowledged that inadequate pay has contributed to severe staffing shortages and pledged to support recurring compensation.
“When it comes to paraprofessionals, we have so many vacant positions because these positions simply do not pay enough,” you said at a mayoral debate.
“I support legislation in the Council… which would create a recurring annual bonus so we can actually fill those positions.”
Those were not simply campaign promises to UFT members, they were commitments made to thousands of paraprofessionals who continue to wait for meaningful action.
I urge you to work with Council Speaker Julie Menin, the City Council and UFT President Michael Mulgrew to revisit legislation that provides recurring annual compensation.
You campaigned on affordability and on standing with working people.
Omitting paraprofessional compensation from your first budget is inconsistent with those commitments.
Brooklyn: To Voicer Richard Vella: While I understand your sense of outrage about the street closures due to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, I actually think that their $26 million donation to multiple charities — not to mention all the money that must have gone to local florists, the crew who set up the MSG venue, etc. — made up for the temporary travel inconvenience to drivers.
A lot of people and animals in need will be fed because of those generous donations to food banks, the ASPCA and other nonprofits.
They also raised awareness of the organizations they gave to, so Swifties are now giving donations of $13 (Taylor’s lucky number) to these charities.
And driving through Midtown is always a traffic nightmare!
If you’re not taking public transit, that’s on you, not Taylor and Travis!

Ironically, I didn’t hear one word from you guys when President Trump made his most unwelcome visit to NYC and attended the Knicks Finals game at MSG with the same conditions.
Well, what do you know — I’m hearing crickets!

Kirsten Gillibrand must see the light, and with Sen.
Chuck Schumer, at least stall the bill until the people defeat enough crypto-funded candidates to bring real reform.

Philadelphia: To Voicer Lloyd Litwak: The picture of Karl Marx shown right next to your letter about the Democrats’ “big tent” being open to antisemites and Nazis should be more than enough to scare anyone away from voting for those evil Communist Democrats in November.
However, the most recent pictures of Trump are even scarier.

Platner may be the danger to women that Trump and Kevin McCarthy bemoan he is with their staggering, pious hypocrisy, but there’s no proof yet that he is.

Susan Collins has proved through her voting record that she’s a danger to more women than Platner could ever be.
There’s also proof that Trump is an adjudicated sexual predator.
A jury said so.
Then there’s Jeffrey Epstein.
Why should the accusations of “Jane Doe #4” against Trump carry less weight than the accusations against Platner?
Republicans are the real danger to women and to everyone except billionaire donors.

Larger-than-life loophole
Somers, N.Y.: Voicer John Piccolo’s argument against birthright citizenship is vacuous.
He gave a variety of scenarios where women can enter the U.S., give birth and then leave.
I don’t believe a woman who is near the end of her pregnancy will decide to come to the U.S. as a tourist, give birth here, then return to her country.
All of his other descriptions of birth in America could happen, but I don’t see millions of babies being born for birthright citizenship.
The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868 for anyone born on our soil.
All of a sudden, now it’s a real problem?
Have all those expectant mothers just realized they can come here and give birth?
The only way to change this is not by executive order, but by a constitutional amendment.
